Garlic Fertilization Soak
Jump-start roots and boost vigor before cloves ever hit the soil.
Why Soak?
- Kickstarts root development for better overwintering.
- Improves nutrient access for even spring growth.
- Helps uniform emergence and bulb sizing.
Step-by-Step
| Step | What to Do |
|---|---|
| Select & Prep | Choose large, healthy cloves; keep papery skins on. |
| Optional Sanitize | 10 minutes in 70% isopropyl alcohol, 3% H₂O₂, or follow label for food-safe sanitizer. Drain well. |
| Mix Soak | Water + organic liquid feed (fish/kelp or balanced fertilizer) + ~1 tsp baking soda per gallon. |
| Soak | At least 30 minutes; up to overnight. Max ~3 days—if roots appear, handle very gently. |
| Drain & Plant | Let excess run off; plant immediately at normal depth/spacing. |
Strength matters: When in doubt, dilute. Over-strong solutions can burn tissue.
Good Inputs
- Fish emulsion or fish/kelp blends
- Seaweed (kelp) extract
- Compost tea (well-made, filtered)
- Organic balanced liquid fertilizers
Timing
Do the soak right before fall planting. If weather delays you, monitor for root nubs and plant gently when visible.
Tips & Troubleshooting
- Room-temp water works best; avoid very cold/hot solutions.
- Label varieties if soaking multiple types.
- If cloves get mushy: solution too strong or soak too long—reduce both next time.
